Porcelain Inlays / Onlays in Aldershot, Ontario

Besides bonded fillings and dental crowns, two other common types of dental restorations are porcelain inlays / onlays. Compared to fillings, inlays and onlays are able to restore more extensive types of damage. They differ from crowns by the fact that they don’t treat the entire tooth’ surface.

Inlays treat the inner grooves of a tooth but don’t extend over the cusps. An onlay restores the more extensive damage that impacts the tooth’s cusps or edges or biting surface. For this reason, onlays are also known as partial crowns.

The Aldershot dentist will likely recommend an inlay if the decayed or damaged section of the tooth doesn’t impact the tooth’s cusp or if a crown will likely weaken the tooth’s structure. However, if the damage has extended beyond the cusps of the tooth, an onlay may be more appropriate. This gives the dentist various options for treating a decayed or broken tooth.

Unlike fillings, both inlays and onlays are created in the dental lab. Both types of restorations require two appointments to be placed. The tooth is first numbed and the decayed portion is removed using a dental drill. Impressions of the tooth are made and sent to the dental lab where the restoration is made. Dental inlays and onlays can be made of gold, porcelain or composite resin.

Gold provides great protection; however, is extremely noticeable when speaking or smiling. In comparison, both porcelain and composite resin are more attractive since they can be matched to the teeth’s natural shade. This allows them to blend in with the existing teeth while restoring and strengthening the damaged tooth’s surface. Compared to fillings, porcelain inlays / onlays are more durable and can sustain the pressures of daily chewing.
